The Smiths were a hugely influential alternative rock/jangle pop band which formed in 1982 in Manchester, England.
The band consisted of Steven Morrissey (vocals, lyrics), Johnny Marr (guitar, music), Mike Joyce (drums) and Andy Rourke (bass).
The Smiths lasted all of five years from 1982 to 1987, releasing during this period four studio albums (The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come), three compilation albums (Hatful of Hollow, The World Won’t Listen and Louder Than Bombs), and a live album (Rank).
“If I had to explain why The Smiths are the most amazing thing in the world it’s because they reach into the part of you where you feel the most weak, vulnerable and unacceptable and glorify it, make it heroic. With me it’s beyond just having a favourite band" -Russell Brand
